Lapwing
The Challenge
The brief for this project was a simple yet contemporary garden design that would be both elegant and family-friendly. Our clients were seeking a low-maintenance, stylish outdoor space, and we aimed to create a design that blended practical, hard-wearing materials with soft landscaping for a balanced look. The small size of the garden called for strategic planning to maximise every inch of space and meet the family’s requirements.
The Garden Design and Creation
We began by excavating the existing turf, path, and top layer of soil to prepare for the new layout. The raised planters were constructed from oak railway sleepers, giving the garden a natural touch. We ran cables for lighting and filled the beds with free-draining, BS-certified topsoil before painting the fence a rustic slate colour to tie the elements together.
Once the groundwork was complete, we laid a type 1 sub-base and compacted it, preparing for the installation of two distinct patio areas. For the paving, we used cinder porcelain tiles with a wood-effect grain from Northhill nursery, combining the warmth of weathered wood with the durability of porcelain. The slate cobble edging added a polished finish, complementing the rustic tones of the fence and the soft greens of the new plantings.
The garden beds were filled with a stunning selection of small shrubs, lollypop bay trees, and ornamental miscanthus from Flourish Plants. These plants provide height, structure, and a touch of elegance, softening the hard surfaces and bringing in colour, movement, and fragrance.
The final stages of the project included laying a concrete haunch along the garden’s perimeter and compacting grano dust before installing the artificial lawn. The lawn was carefully cut to size, glued to the haunch, and brushed with silica sand to maintain a fresh, natural appearance. Our lighting specialist, Jelvis, then installed the garden lights, adding the perfect finishing touch.
The New Garden Landscape
The completed garden is a charming, low-maintenance space that the whole family can enjoy. With its durable cinder porcelain patios, lush planting, and soft artificial lawn, it’s both stylish and practical. Our clients have shared photos of their children happily playing and helping with watering duties. A year later, the plants have flourished, filling out the garden beautifully and creating a vibrant, welcoming space that truly meets the family’s needs.
