The Challenge

This modern garden project in Barnham required a redesign that would withstand year-round use and accommodate the client’s active dog. The existing lawn was patchy and in poor condition due to low sunlight and wear. To address this, we aimed to create a sleek, low-maintenance garden that would remain attractive throughout the seasons. We started the installation during a harsh winter, battling sub-freezing temperatures, which made the work physically challenging, but the clients were wonderfully supportive throughout the process.

The Garden Design and Creation

To enhance the garden’s contemporary feel, we began by painting the fence black, creating a striking contrast that makes the plants pop and adding an instant touch of elegance. We removed the existing turf, re-laid the corner patio, and prepped the ground for a dog-specialised artificial lawn, designed to withstand regular use and remain green year-round. This durable lawn provides a practical solution, as the client’s dog can enjoy the space without damaging the grass.

We constructed a continuous raised plant bed along the garden edges, using oak railway sleepers. These beds house a stunning selection of specimen plants and trees from @flourish_plants_uk and @northhillnurseries, including cherry blossoms, multi-stemmed silver birches, and tree ferns. The addition of these plants creates a dynamic landscape with height, structure, and seasonal interest, transforming the garden into a lush retreat.

The New Garden Landscape

The final design balances functionality and style, with a low-maintenance artificial lawn, bold black fencing, and raised planting that offers year-round visual appeal. The garden is now a resilient, modern space that the clients and their dog can enjoy regardless of the season. Despite the challenges of winter weather, the result is a sleek, contemporary garden that complements the home and provides a beautiful outdoor area for the family to cherish.
